Hockey Teams Dominate Quicksticks Tournament

Published

Last Thursday, the CtS Hockey squad claimed 1st  and 3rd at the year 5 & 6 Quicksticks Tournament held in the driving rain and freezing hailstorm at the Alec Reed Academy.

CtS entered 2 squads, with games being a strict 4v4 format of two girls and two boys. Both teams negotiated their way through the group stages as winners, scoring plenty of goals and playing with great verve. This put them into the quarter finals, and once again they proved too much for their opposition, making comfortable progress into the semis. This was when matters became interesting as, in a cruel twist of fate, both teams were drawn against each other… On the plus side this meant that CtS would definitely be represented in the final, but it also meant that good friends would go head to head..

The semi final was a tense affair, with both teams cancelling the other out and struggling to create any kind of lasting impact during normal time. Extra time came and went so we headed for a Golden Goal period, where teams simultaneously withdrew a player each until a team scored. 4 became 3, then 2 and finally it was 1v1 as Max and Yiannis grappled for supremacy in an enthralling end to the match. Eventually Yiannis emerged the victor, proving to be too strong as he rounded Max and finished with aplomb. Max’s efforts weren’t in vain though as his spirit was recognized by the Borough and he was given the individual award for ‘Determination’ after his gutsy display.

The final proved to be more straightforward for CtS with William scoring two goals in a 2-1 win, either side of a goal from the opposition. The entire squad were a credit to CtS and every member should be proud of how well they represented our community, despite the adverse weather conditions, and will look forward to playinging for the school at the Borough Finals in February. Thank you to Miss Rodgers for her continued enthusiam and well done everyone involved for making it a memorable afternoon.
