January in Reception

A warm welcome back to all children and parents! We hope you had a lovely, restful and relaxing Christmas and that 2016 has started well for you.

The children seem to have grown over the break - both in terms of height and maturity. They have thrown themselves into learning and activities with enthusiasm, passion and determination!

Having now finished learning all initial sounds (single letter sounds), we have used this week in Phonics to consolidate this knowledge, practising writing all the letters, segmenting and blending words. Next week, we will be starting digraphs (2 letters that make one sound), so this is an exciting time of year as the children will start to access slightly trickier words in their reading and writing.

In Literacy, we have been writing about our Christmas presents and our favourite toys to support our latest topic.

In Maths, we have been looking at shapes. Most children had a good understanding of 2D shapes so we have progressed to 3D shapes! Do ask your child about cubes, cuboids, cylinders, spheres and cones!

In our RE lessons, our Bible story last week was Jonah and the Whale, and this week we will be looking at Daniel and the Lion's Den. The children have been fantastic at sequencing pictures from the story of Jonah.

In PE, the children have braved the cold weather to start work on their ball skills; throwing, catching, patting, kicking and pushing. Please do send in extra layers for your child's PE kit during these chilly months. We recommend a long sleeved black top to go under their PE T-shirt, and jogging bottoms to keep their legs warm.

To develop our Understanding of the World, we will be starting to look at electricity over the next few weeks. Feel free to look at this topic at home and see what you can find in your house that uses electricity!

We have also started to use our outdoor environment in the afternoons for Outdoor Learning. The children have been able to use lots of new equipment, toys and resources. Please do be aware that when your child is on outdoor learning, they might be spending a large part of their afternoon in the playground, as lunch time is also outside. Please send extra layers, hats, gloves, scarves in to keep your children nice and toasty so they are able to enjoy and learn outdoors! As always, PLEASE make sure EVERY ITEM IS NAMED. We still find an unbelievable amount of unnamed clothing each week and it is such a shame to not be able to return it to its owners!

Finally, we have had lots of questions about water. The children do have access to water throughout the day, including in the playground, but it is a lot easier for them to drink regularly if they have a named water bottle in school. This can stay in school - we will change the water daily - and it means they are able to stay hydrated without needing an adult to find a cup for them!

New photos this term will be added to the 'Reception Spring Term' album on Flickr. Keep checking back for new pictures!

As always, thank you for your continued support.
