Tarry a little, there is something else,
This bond doth give thee here no jot of blood;
The words expressly are "a pound of flesh."
In uttering these words so does Portia cleverly save Bassanio from the knife of Shylock at the end of Shakespeare's, "The Merchant of Venice". It was a dramatic ending to the play which Year 6 have been exploring this half term with the help of the Orange Tree Theatre Company from Richmond. Through a drama workshop led by a professional actor Year 6 were introduced to the characters of the play and given an opportunity to explore the story line. In preparation for seeing the performance Year 6 made Venetian masks, ready to wear in the Venice carnival scene.
The Orange Tree Theatre's perfomance of the play was interactive, involving pupils in delivering lines, appearing on stage and taking part in the crowd scene with their masks. It was a fantastic experience, hugely enjoyed by Year 6 pupils and staff, and an excellent preparation for the pupils as they look forward to studying more Shakespeare at high school next year.
