Black History Month Role Models

The theme of Black History Month 2020, “Know the past, shape the future”, proved to be an exciting stimulus for our Black History focus during the month of October.

In our weekly collective worship, as we looked at the Christian value of justice, we looked back to the past and drew inspiration from the lives of Harold Moody, Mary Prince and Thurgood Marshall. We learned how they had courageously fought against injustice and we reflected on how we could also be individuals who stood up for justice. We can also recommend these two fantastic books by Vashti Harrison which include their stories as well information about many other black history heroes.

In class during Black History month the focus was on pupils looking to their own futures and being inspired by real life black role models living among us in our communities. Pupils in each year group had the opportunity to learn about the career of black people working in the arts, media, science, health and development and business. Pupils were able to ask write down questions they wished to ask and then our volunteer individuals recorded their answers and sent them back to us by video! It was fantastic to have such a personal connection – to see an example of what went on you may like to watch Ria Hebden answering pupils’ questions in the video posted above.
