Implementation
In line with the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum modern foreign language lessons are only taught in Key Stage 2. In EYFS and Key Stage 1, the rigorous teaching of phonics and early reading, listening and writing skills forms the foundations for the introduction of a foreign language in KS2.
KS2
At CtS pupils study French from Years 3 – 6. Lessons are delivered by a specialist teacher to ensure that accurate pronunciation and intonation is developed. The practical focus of each lesson, involving call and response, chants and role-play develops pupils’ listening skills and confidence in speaking. Understanding of the language and vocabulary is promoted through engaging songs, rhymes, and stories which the pupils really enjoy. Pupils build their confidence through communicating both orally and in writing about familiar topics, such as their families, the weather, food, sport and their own interests and hobbies. Pupils’ curiosity about the world is fostered through learning about French speaking countries and important French cultural traditions and celebrations such as Bastille Day.
In addition to the French lessons delivered by our specialist language teacher, pupils also have the opportunity to attend a French club, details can be found on our after school clubs page.
For parents wishing to support their child with learning French, ‘Collins First French Dictionary‘ and ‘Collins Primary French Dictionary’ are excellent resources and the website French-games.net has a good range of age appropriate activities to reinforce the learning of vocabulary. Once on the French-games.net home page, clickon the ‘Start’ to select either word level or sentence level activities on different primary school topics. Our French curriculum overview, which shows which topics are taught each term, can be found below.
