09 Nov A Dickensian start to the term
It was an eventful start to the half term for Year 6.
Learning in English this half term will be based around Charles Dickens’ classic festive novel ‘A Christmas Carol’. To get into the Dickensian spirit and understand a little part of life during the time Dickens’ novel was set, the Year 6 team decided to partake in their learning in full Victorian dress.
It was wonderful to see so many children (and teachers!) engaged in such an active way. Part of our learning in the morning was presenting research about this period of history. We learned that richer families lived in large houses with a servants quarters (which was a whole different floor of the house); poorer families lived on mostly bread, milk and cheese as meat was an expensive luxury and that only children from wealthy families were able to attend school!
Despite the challenges we’re facing in 2020, I think everyone in Year 6 was pleased they did not live during the Victorian times.
Thank you parents for supporting us to facilitate such an exciting learning experience with all of the amazing costumes!
