30 Oct Our aspirational community
Pupils have enjoyed celebrating Black History Month during October. The theme for Black History Month this year is: ‘Proud to Be.’ The focus of Black History Month in our Collective Worship was linked to our school vision:
– an aspirational community –
We looked at the lives of people from the black community who have had high aspirations and shown endurance as they have endeavoured to achieve those aspirations.
All classes learnt more about a close member of our school community, Floyd Steadman. Floyd’s late wife Denise worked at our school for over 30 years and was a much loved member of the school staff. Floyd spoke to our Year 5 and 6 pupils about his inspiring story as a Headteacher and elite sportsperson and shared some of the experiences of unconscious bias as well as direct racism he has experienced during his life. Pupils and staff have been inspired by learning more about his life story and were grateful that he took the time to come and share his lived experiences with us before his Sky Sports Documentary was released.
Two former CtS pupils attended a book launch during half term on our behalf and picked up a signed copy of Floyd’s new book “A Week One Summer” for every upper key stage 2 class. We know this will be a popular book on our bookshelves next half term!
