15 Oct Year 5 Geography Field Work
Our Year 5 classes enjoyed geography field trips to our local River Brent this week to learn more about the features of rivers, how rivers impact the environment around them and how rivers are in turn impacted by humans.
Year 5 studied the meanders of the River Brent, identifying erosion and deposits and noticing particularly how soil erosion had caused trees to become unstable and topple into the river.
Pupils then walked along the banks of the river identifying the different types of pollution that could be seen in the river, classifying the rubbish by material for example, plastic, metal, glass or rubber. We discovered that plastic was by far the most frequent type of material found in the River Brent and that because plastic is not biodegradable it will be there for a long time or be carried out to the mouth of the river where it will pollute the oceans.
Year 5 are keen to discuss and learn more about how we can keep our rivers pollution free and what we can do to look after our natural environment.
