12 Mar British Science Week Show
As winners of the British Science Week Time competition hosted by the Royal Air Force Museum, pupils from Years 3 to 6 were treated to a free Science Show that taught them about the physics of flight and the science behind aviation.
The children were delighted to learn about how planes fly and the various forces that act upon them; the children were asked to reflect upont thrust, lift, drag and weight and how those forces interact to enable planes to fly.
Pupils learned how faster moving air over a surface creates lower air pressure, thus creating lift and enabling a plane to fly; the demonstration of this in action with a huge piece of paper and two leaf blowers was truly memorable!
Allowing children to be active learners, the workshop leader taught the children more about the science of aviation and the effects of being at altitude; some children had the opportunity to try on genuine sheepskin flying jackets, and everyone observed what would happen to a foam-filled Mr Potato Head if air was taken away!
Thank you to everyone who sent entries into RAF Hendon’s time themed science competition that enabled us to win this great show and a huge thank you to our science lead, Ms Song, for making this all happen.
