22 Oct Learning about Local History
To complete their World War Two local history study this term, Year six pupils took a local history walk, visiting the Ealing War Memorial as well as Ealing Abbey, to gain a better understanding of how the war impacted the local area. Pupils were surprised at how much they could learn from the history that could be found on their doorstep:
‘Reading the soldiers’names carved into the stone walls, up close, made it all more real for me.’
‘I learned to spot clues showing its importance to Ealing, like it was built in front of Pitshanger Manor (the most expensive building in the area) and it has 4 special columns with huge Grecian-looking urns on top.’
‘Although I live right by Ealing Abbey, I didn’t know that it was bombed twice in the Blitz and there’s a special mosaic-covered chapel donated by Germany to show remorse for the damage.’
