22 Oct Black History Month
A huge thank you to all the pupils and families in our community who have shared their stories of the Notting Hill Carnival with us over the past few weeks. It has brought colour and energy to the classrooms; we have learned about the traditional roots of the carnival in the Caribbean and how it was brought to the streets of London through the work of activists like Claudia Jones and Rhaune Laslett. We have enjoyed hearing steel pan music, reading stories about carnival, and making feathered carnival headdresses.
A particular thanks to those families who have lent us their beautiful costumes for our displays – they have brought joy and gasps of delight from both the children and the adults!
Children have shared how the experience of carnival makes them feel special and how learning about the Notting Hill Carnival at school makes them feel proud. One pupil shared “I am so proud my granny was part of the Windrush Generation.’
This wonderful poem from Tanaiya in Year 6 sums up carnival for us all so well – thank you Tanaiya!
