15 Dec Spotlight on Year 1 Writing
This term Year One has been reading Pumpkin Soup.
The children have taken part in a range of carousel activities focussed on developing core writing skills centred around this story, including.
developing fine motor skills
recognising and spelling a range of high frequency words and story words
holding and writing a sentence
finger spacing
punctuation
Art and role play activities have immersed the children in the story line and provided opportunities for pupils to sequence events and explore the thoughts and feelings of characters.
The writing opportunities have varied from creating their own soup in the role play area to writing about the characters feelings and letters to the Duck from Cat and Squirrel.
Pumpkin Soup has opened up so much discussion on friendships and taking turns. It has been wonderful listening to what the children have thought about the text:
“I like the way that they shared the jobs.” Mark 1GG
“I like that they were in harmony at the start of the story.” Amelia 1GG
“I liked the bit when the Cat and the Squirrel went looking for Duck. They really missed him.” Maria 1GG
“I liked the pictures in the story.” Victoria 1GG
“I liked acting out the story and using the emotions card.” Noah 1GG
