EYFS Implementation
We recognise the importance of physical development in the Early Years as a key area of learning. Physical education is delivered through the continuous access to the outdoor environment and twice weekly, structured PE lessons. The activities planned encourage our children to be active and interactive and to develop their agility, balance and co-ordination.
KS1 Implementation
In KS1, children build on the confidence gained in movement at EYFS. Children learn to develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. Children engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
KS2 Implementation
In lower KS2, lessons focus on developing and applying the broad range of skills children have learnt during their time in KS1. More emphasis is placed on applying these skills in game situations and performance related tasks. Children begin to learn rules and scoring systems for these games, and start to think about how they can work best as part of a team. In upper KS2, children continue to think about teamwork, but look more deeply into the tactical side of games. They will also get the opportunity to experience different roles in sport including as coach, performer and official. Children are encouraged to analyse their own performance, so that they can compare their performances with previous ones to achieve their personal best. The relationship between physical activity and health is explored through a unit on Health Related exercise in each year group.
Swimming
In Years 3 or 4, children attend swimming lessons at Acton Pool. Each class attends weekly lessons over the course of a half term. Lessons are taught by specialist swimming instructors who assess the children at the start and end of the swimming course. Booster swimming lessons are offered to children who are identified as needing them.
Children learn how to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA)
In UKS2, a residential visit provides our children with the opportunity to participate in many different outdoor activities, which include orienteering and team building activities.
