26 Feb Fun Fractions in Year 2
Year 2 have been busy learning all about halves, quarters and thirds and using their knowledge to find equal parts of shapes as well as fractions of numbers. The children learned that fractions of shapes consist of equal parts and that the denominator tells us how many parts a shape has been divided into. We looked closely at the size and shapes of parts to determine if they were equal or unequal and learned that finding a quarter is the same as finding half, then halving again.
The children have begun to apply their understanding of equal parts to finding fractions of numbers using concrete and pictorial support. They used strategies such as dividing into the correct number of equal groups, checking the numerator to know how many groups to combine and applying their knowledge of number bonds and times tables to work out fractions of numbers efficiently. We learned that fractions can be represented by different shapes and arrays and used this understanding to solve problems and reason. We are so impressed with your maths learning Year 2! Well done
