08 Oct Local Geography Field Trips
Last week, Year Five enjoyed a successful local Geography trip to Pitshanger Park as part of their study on Rivers. The pupils observed the River Brent and drew and labelled diagrams using geographic language and were excited to be able to identify different aspects of rivers in person. They also conducted a survey on how much pollution there was at the river and many children were shocked by the level of pollution that they could see.
Saule in 5AC said, “Before the trip, we made river posters so that we had lots of knowledge before we went. I go to Pitshanger Park often but I learnt there is more pollution in rivers than you expect.”
Femi in 5JN added, “Ms Ng taught us lots of Geography lessons before we went so we knew a lot about the river when we got there. I saw the river was meandering and I saw pollution like rubber tyres and tin cans.”
Back in class, the pupils analysed what they had discovered and graphed their results, before discussing their findings. Maya in 5AJ shared, “When we first looked, the meanders looked beautiful under the trees but when we looked closer we found all the pollution that ruined the view. We also could see where the erosion was starting to uncover the tree roots. I think eventually some of the trees might fall into the river as the erosion will make them unstable.”
Shahrnoush, 5HN, added, “The river came from its mouth in an industrial area so we predicted we’d see lots of pollution but I was shocked and couldn’t believe what I saw. I would like to organise a protest by the river to educate people.”
The Year Five team are very grateful to all the parents and extra staff who helped make the trip safe and successful. We were also proud of the careful and thoughtful observations the children made and how well they conducted themselves on the walk there and back.
