25 Nov There’s a Snake in the Classroom!
Year One welcomed some new visitors today when Zoolab came to speak to the children about different types of animals, from reptiles to insects.
We met Gary, the cockroach from Madagascar. He makes hissing noises to defend himself from predators. We learned that Freddo the Australian tree frog catches his prey with his tongue and then swallows his food with his eyes! When Freddo is cold he changes colour and he can jump 5 feet. Flash the snail hides in his shell when he is cold – we couldn’t believe it but he has around 14,000 teeth! The highlight of the day was Ekans, The North American corn snake, who was very friendly and let us hold and stroke him.
Our learning in Zoolab helped build on our knowledge of invertebrates and vertebrates, as well as discussing the varying animal diets. Year One impressed the Zoolab by already knowing the difference between herbivores, carnivores and omnivores!
