22 Mar World Down Syndrome Day
On Thursday 21st March we marked World Down Syndrome Day by wearing odd socks to school to celebrate our differences. The theme for World Down Syndrome Day this year was ‘End the Stereotypes.’ We learned that a stereotype is a set idea that people have about what someone or something is like. Stereotypes can be positive, negative or neutral, but they are often inaccurate, or simply wrong!
People with Down Syndrome often face negative or unhelpful stereotypes that impact their daily lives and the opportunites they have.
The truth is that people are all different. Each person with Down Syndrome is different. Each person without Down Syndrome is different. We all have our individual identity, interests, likes and dislikes, gifts and talents and we need to celebate our differences and avoid harmful sterotypes. We hope by doing this that we can all make the world a fairer and kinder place for everyone to live in.
