14 Oct Year 2 Visit Our Local War Memorial
Our Year 2 classes have had a really special time this week visiting our local war memorial as part of their history unit. Pupils have been learning about the importance of Remembrance Day, they have looked at what life was like in the trenches in the First World War and have reflected on how war has affected previous generations; the children have learned about the symbolism of the poppy and the importance of remembering as a Nation.
Ealing’s war memorial was built in 1921 after local residents raised over £5000 so they could honour those who had fought in the First World War. The memorial is very close to our school, near the gates to Walpole Park. Pupils searched the 1570 inscriptions on the war memorial for individual names, finding both Ms Lavelle’s Great Uncle and Miss Harman, the only woman whose name is honoured on the memorial. Pupils also took time to reflect and say a prayer together, really enjoying their time of experiencing local and national history outside of the classroom.
