31 Oct Year 6 ‘Make do and Mend’
For their DT Projects this term, Year 6 have designed and created rag rugs. Linking to our World War 2 topic, we learned about ‘Make Do and Mend’ and how important it was not to let anything go to waste during wartime. We designed our rugs and then spent a lot of time and care cutting the strips of fabric (the ‘rags’) and weaving them together to form our final rugs. The plaiting and weaving were challenging new skills to master, requiring dexterity, concentration and perseverance!
One child shared, “I thought it was really fun; I liked knotting it together and plaiting the fabric to make the rug. I like how it turned out.” Another child said, “It was quite challenging and it took a lot longer than I thought it would but I think it looks really good!”
