18 Nov Snakes, Spiders and Snails!
Year One have been studying animals and learning how to identify different animals in their science unit this term. Their learning was really brought to life in a ZooLab Workshop last week that involved some very special visitors coming to the school!
As they looked at the animals, Year One learned about Classification, that vertebrates have a backbone inside their body but invertebrates are cold blooded with no backbone. The children were fascinated by the incredible abilities of the animals to travel on a variety of surfaces and to protect themselves from predators. Year One learned so many exciting facts about the animals who came to visit:
Turbo was a giant snail who has over 10,000 teeth. We were amazed to find out that snails eat bones to get calcium to grow a shell.
Rosie the tarantula was very hairy, she couldn’t run or jump and she can stay in her home for up to a year. She has 8 legs and 8 eyes. Rosie loves eating small bugs!
Michelle the cockroach was a brilliant climber! She has 2 brains, one in her head and the other in her tummy. How incredible is that?
Echo the lizard has excellent hearing. His tail was very smooth, he could see in the dark and he would usually live in the desert.
Slinky the snake was super smooth and shiny and it was very special to hold him.
Year One loved the visit and learnt so much! Thank you Zoolab.
