02 Oct Exploring the Stone Age
Earlier this term, Year 3 enjoyed learning more about the Stone Age through a visit from staff at Gunnersbury Museum. The children were able to see and touch a variety of artefacts, including a mammoth tooth and a handaxe. They learned that if a Stone Age object contains wood, it must be a secondary source because real wood from the Stone Age would have rotted away by now.
The most exciting part of the workshop involved drama and roleplay as the children prepared to catch a wild boar. The children learned how to throw spears and then celebrated with a Stone Age dance once they caught the boar!
After a long hunt, the children attempted to build a shelter. They used a combination of animal skins and sticks to build a place for them to rest, and some groups managed to build their shelter in less than ten seconds.
Year 3 are excited to continue learning about the Stone Age over the next month and they will use everything they learned during the workshop to further deepen their understanding of the time period.
