19 Oct Black History Month
We are proud of our year-round broad and rich curriculum that reflects the diversity of our school community, but this month, the month of October, is a time in the year when we have a special focus on celebrating black heritage.
This year we are reflecting on the theme of justice in our worship and gaining inspiration from the lives of Mary Prince and Harold Moody. Our Wednesday worship hymn focus this month is centered on the song writer Wallis Wills and his moving hymn ‘Steal Away to Jesus’. If you want to know more, remember that our worship videos are updated weekly on our website under the News section and you can also sing along and reflect on our weekly hymn choices on our Worship page.
In our curriculum time we have been celebrating traditional African and Caribbean storytelling by learning about the stories of Anansi the spider. At the Broadway site our exploration of the Anansi tales began by hearing the retelling of two stories by Big Foot Arts Education; Anansi and Nyame’s Wooden Box and Anansi and the Turtle. The children have gone on to compare different retellings of the same story and to think about how traditional story telling is an important way of passsing down morals and cultural values.

At the Grove site, the children have been exploring the tales of ‘Anasi and the Tug of War’ and ‘Anansi and the Pot of Wisdom’ and have been learning to retell stories themselves. If you would like to learn more of the Anansi stories at home yourself there are some recommended books below.
