24 Mar Spotlight on Writing: Year 2
Year 2 have been inspired by their recent English lessons, where they studied Greta and the Giants. The story, which follows a young girl determined to protect a forest from destruction, sparked meaningful discussions about climate change, wildlife loss, and the importance of protecting natural habitats.
Year 2 pupils have proven that you’re never too young to stand up for the planet, after writing heartfelt and persuasive letters to Prime Minister Keir Starmer about the dangers of deforestation.
In their letters, pupils used thoughtful arguments and emotive language. Many explained how deforestation affects animals, pointing out that cutting down trees destroys habitats for creatures like monkeys, birds, and insects.
Others highlighted the importance of trees for humans, noting their role in providing oxygen and helping to fight climate change.
The letters have now been sent to Downing Street, and the class is eagerly awaiting a reply. Whatever the outcome, the experience has already had an impact.
“I am shocked that each year 15 billion trees are chopped down and the animals are losing their homes. We more need to plant more trees to save the animals that call the forest their home” Hezekiah (2SD)
“I am looking forward to getting a response back from Keir Starmer and he will help us stop deforestation. We need the trees as they give us air and without them we won’t be able to breathe” Senaria (2RS)
