Reception make a discovery!

03 Jun Reception make a discovery!

Posted at 12:11h in Reception by Eve Goodman

3…2…1… Blast Off!

Recently, Reception were shocked to discover a mysterious crash landing in the playground! The children arrived to find strange clues, scattered debris and signs that something unusual had fallen from the sky overnight. The excitement and curiosity across Reception was incredible from the moment they walked through the gate.

Day 1: The Investigation Begins

The children became real investigators as they explored the crash site, searching for clues and discussing what the mysterious object could possibly be. They shared imaginative ideas ranging from rockets and shooting stars to aliens and space travellers. The children carefully examined evidence, drew pictures of what they thought had happened and used fantastic speaking and listening skills to explain their theories to their friends.

Day 2: A Message From the Star

The mystery deepened when the children discovered a special note from the star itself! The star explained that it was lost and needed help getting back home to space. Reception immediately got to work, collaborating to think of possible ways to help. The children acted out ideas, explored movement and role play and discussed different types of transport and inventions that could launch the star back into the sky.

Day 3: An Important Message

Excitement grew even more when we received a message from one of our Reception parents, who had heard all about our stranded star. He kindly offered to help us complete our mission and challenged the children to become rocket designers! The children spent the day planning, drawing and creating their own rockets whilst discussing what strong and successful rockets might need in order to fly.

Day 4: Rocket Launch Day!

The final day brought the most exciting moment of all. The parent came to school with a battery powered launch machine which used air pressure to send our very own paper rockets flying high into the sky! The children watched in amazement as their designs blasted upwards, filling the playground with excitement, wonder and cheers. It was a truly unforgettable experience that brought our entire week of learning to life.

Throughout the week, the children developed their communication, teamwork, imagination and problem solving skills through meaningful and exciting experiences. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity and creativity flourish through this memorable topic.

We would also like to say a huge thank you to our parent helper for giving the children such an inspiring experience and helping make our mysterious star’s journey home possible!

Rocket Ideas to Try at Home

Families may also enjoy trying some of the simple rocket activities that were shared with us:

  • Balloon Rocket: Thread string through a straw and pull it tightly across a room or garden. Tape an inflated balloon to the straw and let it go to watch it race along the string like a rocket.
  • Straw Rockets: Use two different sized straws to create mini rockets. Decorate a paper rocket that fits loosely over a straw, then blow through the straw to launch it into the air.
