Our Year 6 Mental Health Champions put their skills into practice last week during a peer mentoring session with other pupils. After sharing more about their role and the upcoming ‘listening-to-peers’ sessions in assembly, we labelled and put out worry boxes on each year group’s floor. Pupils were then invited to pop their name in the box, along with their worry, and a session was allocated for them to talk 1-to-1 with a Mental Health Champion.
Our skillful Mental Health Champions were able to offer advice about small things that were bothering others; they listened and suggested next steps such as talking to other adults, strategies to remain calm and ways to return to the green zone. One of our Mental Health Champions said, “I think it’s really important that schools have people that you can talk to about worries, no matter how little or small. I hope the children found it helpful.”
One of the children who attended the sessions shared, “I felt like it was really helpful because I think the Mental Health Champions were really good – Blessing was really nice and she shared her own experience which made me feel better because she’s gone through it too.”
Another added, “I found it really helpful speaking to Ella – she helped me to understand that if I’m finding something hard to use some strategies, like using my breath, and she gave me really kind words. She gave lots of good advice.”
To all our Mental Health Champions, thank you for being such helpful, kind advocates for others and prioritising the mental health of our CtS community.
