29 Jun Neoclassical Architecture in Year 4
Year 4 enjoyed an exciting trip to Pitzhanger Manor, where they explored the building’s impressive neoclassical features. Pitshanger Manor was designed by the famous British Architect, John Soane, whose neoclassical style reflected the late 18th and early 19th century passion for Greek and Roman civilisations. Year 4 looked closely at Pitzhanger Manor’s four stone columns, statues, roof top urns, sculpted lions, and decorative friezes, learning how these details make the building unique.
The children used their sketchbooks to record their favourite features and gather ideas for their upcoming art project, where they will design their own neoclassical buildings.
It was a wonderful opportunity to combine art, our history learning on the Greeks and the Romans, and our observational skills. The children returned to school full of inspiration!
You may like to visit the showcase event at Pitzhanger Manor ‘Architecture After School Club’ on the 1st of July, from 3- 6pm, where some of our Year 4 sketches will be on display.
