29 Oct Creating and Coding in Year 4
During Computing Week, Year 4 explored the question: How are educational games created? Pupils stepped into the role of game developers, using Scratch to plan, code and evaluate their very own interactive maths games.
The week began with pupils exploring popular educational websites to discover how algorithms bring games to life by generating questions, checking answers and providing feedback. Inspired by their findings, they put their learning into practice by designing and building their own maths games.
Pupils programmed their games to recognise correct and incorrect answers, used variables to keep track of scores, and incorporated loops to repeat questions and create multi-level challenges. They then tested one another’s games, shared constructive feedback and put their problem-solving skills to the test by debugging and refining their code.
To round off the week, pupils stepped into the spotlight for a Dragons’ Den-style showcase, pitching their finished games and explaining the thinking behind their designs. This was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate their creativity, perseverance and computational thinking, while building confidence in presenting their ideas.
Who knows? We may have some future game developers in Year 4!
