Staying Safe Online

This week we have been marking Safer Internet Day by talking a lot in our classrooms about our online lives. Whilst online safety is an integral part of our day to day curriculum it is always good to have a particular time of the year when the importance of online safety is highlighted – Safer Internet Day is celebrated in over 170 countries across the world – it is fantastic to think that this week thousands and thousands of children all over the world have been talking in their classrooms about how to be safe online.

We have sent parents 7 emails and short video links over the last few weeks which we hope has helped to deepen your knowledge of what children of all ages can be accessing and enjoying online. The last email sent on Tuesday 7th February contained lots of very helpful links and resources with further online safety information.

Our Year 5 and Year 6 Digital Leaders have made a video to help our children talk about their online lives. It is great to have conversations about what we enjoy doing online, whether it is playing games with our friends, talking to family, watching interesting videos or finding our fascinating facts. But we all recognise that sometimes things can go wrong online and people use the internet in ways which are not safe, kind or responsible. We all need to know how we can behave safely online and what to do if we see others online not being safe.

The video ends with a challenge for us all to have more conversations about what we do online – parents we invite you to take up the challenge too – let’s make talking about being online part of our regular conversations at home so that we can share what we enjoy and talk openly when things go wrong.
