08 Jun Year 2 Environmental Detectives
Our Year 2 pupils turned into environmental detectives this week, launching a hands-on science experiment to discover how different materials affect our oceans.
As part of our Environment Day celebrations, the children are exploring how to look after God’s world by testing which everyday resources biodegrade in sea water, and which ones cause lasting harm.
The classroom window sills are now lined with jars of simulated seawater. Over the next few weeks, Year 2 will be monitoring six different items (apple, paper, foil, wood, wool, plastic) to see how they change and whether they degrade in the oceans.
“The rubbish in our oceans will stay there a long time and is dangerous for animals as they might get trapped in it or think it’s food and eat it” – Evie 2RS
“Nothing is happening to the straw because it’s made up of plastic and it can’t break apart easily in water.” Theo 2NZ
“If we recycle things, we won’t be throwing things away which end up in the ocean and we won’t be wasting resources and plastic water bottles” Nathan 2SD
