27 Jun Floella Benjamin inspires Year 6!
On Monday, Year 6 pupils went on a truly inspiring school trip to an interactive event led by Baroness Floella Benjamin, the beloved presenter of TV’s Playschool and a passionate advocate for children’s rights and equality. The visit included a screening of Coming to England (2005), a moving film adaptation of her autobiography that tells the story of her journey from Trinidad to Britain in the 1960s. After the film, Floella spoke directly to pupils about themes of difference, discrimination and anti-bullying, sharing her personal experiences and encouraging every child to believe in their own self-worth. Her powerful message—“I am worthy!”—resonated deeply with the pupils, leaving them feeling inspired and valued.
“It was really fun watching the movie and taking photos with Baroness Floella Benjamin. It was really sad to hear how she was treated, and I hope people continue to treat others with kindness.” – Fred, 6SS
“It was very educational to learn about how people were treated in the past because of the colour of their skin. The movie was also inspiring and showed us how to stand up for ourselves and taught us how one thing can change everything in your life.” – Pietro, 6SS
