Khalsa Primary School Visit

Last Friday, our Year 4 worship leaders were invited to Khalsa Primary School to join the pupils for their Gurpurab celebrations.

These celebrations were to commemorate Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Birthday – Guru Nanak was an Indian spiritual teacher who is regarded as the founder of Sikhism and is the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. This was a very meaningful celebration to the pupils at the school and we were thrilled to be invited along to this significant cultural event.

When we arrived, we were provided with orange cloth scarves to cover our heads with, as a sign of respect before the holy book. We also had to take our shoes off for this reason, before we went into the school hall. During our time there, we attended a celebration assembly where each year group sang special songs where they commemorated and gave thanks to Guru Nanak. We especially enjoyed Reception’s rendition of N-A-N-A-K, sang to the tune of B-I-N-G-O! We were then given a tour of the school.

Judah shared, “I learnt that different religions celebrate different Gods and one of their special leaders was called Guru Nanak. I enjoyed listening to songs in a different language.”

Thea added, “We learnt about how they celebrate their Guru’s birthday and they played lots of music from Nursery to Year 6. It was good fun because we got to see how they wore special clothes.”

This was a wonderful opportunity for our two schools to connect, share in the spirit of community, and learn about each other’s traditions. We look forward to welcoming the Khalsa pupils to our carol service in December so that they can experience parts of our religion, culture and traditions here at CtS.
