09 Oct Grove Gardening
The children at the Grove site have been making the most of the warm weather this term by enjoying our school gardening areas with Rachel, our school gardener. The first job has been to harvest the rest of the spring onions and carrots that have been growing all summer and to clear the vegetable bed for new planting. The vegetables that our garden produces are given to Chef Joe to add to our tasty school lunches! As you can see below there are still more vegetables waiting to ripen…
Once the vegetable bed was clear of carrot and spring onions the children began planting winter onions and garlic so that they will be ready to harvest in the Spring. The children learned about how each garlic clove acts as a seed and will sleep in the soil over the winter (lying dormant) until it is warm enough next year to grow and produce new garlic bulbs. The children learned how deep they should plant the garlic cloves and each had a turn planting, before watering them in well so that the cloves don’t dry out. We can’t wait to see what happens in the spring!
